The 49ers are set to take the field this weekend for preseason football. San Francisco will host the Denver Broncos on Saturday afternoon in Santa Clara. Running back Isaac Guerendo departed Saturday's practice early due to an apparent shoulder injury. The team has also activated linebacker Curtis Robinson from the PUP list.
A member of the Raiders' secondary has suffered a serious injury during training camp. ESPN is reporting that Las Vegas safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. suffered a broken fibula during Saturday's practice at Allegiant Stadium. Johnson is set to undergo an MRI to determine if there is any additional damage to his leg. The 29-year-old was carted off the field after he collided with defensive end Maxx Crosby while attempting to tackle running back Raheem Mostert. Johnson had been competing for a rotational role in the secondary and has received some first-team reps during camp. In other news, the team has signed wide receiver Kawaan Baker and tight end Albert Okwuegbunam while waiving tight end Pat Conroy and wideout Kyle Philips. The Raiders visit the Seattle Seahawks in their preseason opener on Thursday night.
The Giants cruised to a 12-4 win over the New York Mets in Queens. Giants designated hitter Rafael Devers went 3-for-4 and hit his 20th home run of the season in the victory. Casey Schmitt was 2-for-5 with one homer, two runs scored and three RBIs. Starting pitcher Carson Whisenhunt earned his first career win after allowing just two runs, one earned, through five-and-a-third innings. The Giants have won two of three and sit third in the NL West at 56-and-56. They visit the Pittsburgh Pirates this afternoon.
The Athletics capped off their weekend with a second straight loss. The A's fell to Arizona 6-4 in interleague play in Sacramento. JJ Bleday went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Starting pitcher Jack Perkins was handed a second loss after allowing four runs through three frames. The A's are last in the AL West at 49-and-65. They travel to play the Washington Nationals tomorrow afternoon.
The Valkyries were crushed on the road. Golden State lost to the Las Vegas Aces 101-77 in Sin City. Iliana Rupert led the charge with a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Laeticia Amihere and Carla Leite chipped in 14 points apiece. The Valkyries had a three-game win streak snapped to fall to 14-and-14. They host the Aces on Wednesday night.
