PV & Chico High Open EAL Play........

     The Pleasant Valley girls basketball team will be taking an 8-game winning streak into their Eastern Athletic League opener when they host Shasta on Friday night. The Vikings are 13-3 and have won 12 of their last 13. Their latest win coming against Arcata High on Saturday night 67-60. The Vikings are led by AJ Gambol who is averaging better than 19 points a game. The Vikings play Shasta 6:30 at Varley Gym on Friday night.

 

     The Chico High girls falling in their final tune-up before league play begins. On Monday losing to Marysville High on the road 58-52. Junior Corrina Stephens led the Panthers with 22 points in the setback. The Panthers fall to 8-6 on the season. Chico will open league play on Friday night when they travel to Palo Cedro to take on Foothill.

 

     The Pleasant Valley boys basketball team opens EAL play this Thursday when they travel to Redding to take on Shasta. PV comes in at 6-7 overall while Shasta is at 8-7. The PV boys are led by Anthony Sanchez averaging better than 13 points and 4.3 assists a game. Game time will be at 7:30 on Thursday night.

 

     The Chico High boys open league play with a home game against Foothill at The Pit. The Panther boys had a 7-game win streak snapped last Thursday in a 69-65 loss to Placer High. Chico comes in at 10-6 on the year. Magnus Nielsen paces the Panthers scoring 17 points a game. Vincent Boatwright averages better than 7.5 rebounds a game for Chico. Game time is 7:30 on Thursday night as the Panthers take on the Cougars opening CCAA play.

     The Butte College women's basketball team opening Golden Valley Conference play this week as they take on Redwoods on the road. The Roadrunners make the trek to the coast with an 8-8 record. They are coming off a 75-48 win over Foothill on Saturday. Shade Shatica led the way with 24 points 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Shatica is averaging 23 points a game to pace the Roadrunner women. Game time on tomorrow night is at 7pm

 

     The Butte College men's basketball is also at Redwoods tomorrow. They will play

at 5pm. The Roadrunner men are 10-8 on the season and are coming off of a 94-82 win over Simpson College's JV team before the Christmas holiday. Freshman Kenechi Oh-nal-gul-uchi leads a balanced scoring attack for Butte scoring 12 points a game.

      The Chico State women are rolling. 8 straight wins and an 11-1 record. Chico is tiedfor 1st in the CCAA with the Dominguez Hills Toros as the Wildcats get ready to host Pomona and San Bernardino this week. Senior Makenzie LaPorte leads the way for the Wildcats averaging 15.2 points per game and is shooting 47 percent from three point range. Both Meadow Aragon and Jordan Allred are averaging better than 13 points a game. Chico is scoring 74 points a game and only giving up 58 points a contest. Chico will take on Pomona at 5:30pm on Thursday at Acker Gym. The Broncos are 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the CCAA

 

     The Chico State men have won 9 in a row and are playing great basketball. Chico is tied with Dominguez Hills for 1st place in the CCAA with a 6-0 record and 10-2 overall. Junior PG JoJo Murphy is having a tremenous campaign averaging 20 points and 5 boards a game. Chico is averaging better than 80 ppg.

 

     The Athletics are locking up one of their star players with a long-term contract.  The Athletic is reporting that the A's are signing outfielder Brent Rooker to a five-year, 60-million dollar contract extension.  A vesting option can take the deal to six years and 90-million dollars.  The 30-year-old hit .293 with 39 home runs and 112 RBIs in 145 games played last season.  He has spent the past two seasons with the A's after beginning his career spending time with the Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres and Minnesota Twins.

      A member of the 49ers' secondary is uncertain about his return to the Bay Area next season.  San Francisco cornerback Charvarius Ward acknowledged that a fresh start elsewhere may be best for himself after enduring a traumatic past year that included the death of his daughter just before her second birthday.  Amani Joy passed away in late October following a lengthy battle with heart issues.  Ward mentioned that every time he returns to the Bay Area that "it just brings up bad memories."  The 28-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March.

 

      The Warriors are closing out a six-game homestand.  Golden State hosts the Miami Heat tonight at the Chase Center.  The Warriors come off a 129-99 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Sunday.  Stephen Curry led the way with 26 points and seven rebounds in the setback.  He is pacing the squad with 22.5 points and 6.3 assists per game this season.  The Warriors are eighth in the West at 18-and-17.

 

      The Kings extended their win streak to five games.  Sacramento defeated the Miami Heat 123-118 in a double-overtime contest at the Golden 1 Center.  Domantas Sabonis had a triple-double with 21 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists to go along with three blocks on the defensive end.  DeMar DeRozan scored a team-high 30 points, while Keegan Murray posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.  The Kings are now 18-and-19.  They travel to play the Boston Celtics on Friday afternoon.

 

       The Sharks are aiming for a third straight victory when they return to the ice.  San Jose hosts the Vegas Golden Knights tonight at the SAP Center.  The Sharks are coming off a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.  Cody Ceci, Macklin Celebrini and Nikolai Kovalenko each lit the lamp while Yaroslav Askarov finished with 28 saves in net.  The Sharks remain last in the Pacific Division at 13-23-and-6.
