Chico State Basketball closes out four game road swing
at Dominguez Hills for a Saturday showdown
The Chico State women's basketball is riding a four-game win streak but they will face their most difficult task of this 2022-23 season on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Dominguez Hills Toros in Carson.
Dominguez is 19-0 including a 13-0 CCAA mark. They beat Chico a month at Acker Gym 72-50 without their best player Dawnyel Lair. Lair is the elder states-woman on a team that is filled with freshmen and sophomores. Lair averages better than 14 point and 8 boards a game.
During Chico's four-game winning streak they have taken care of business against teams in the bottom half of the standings. They will have to play one of their best games of the season Saturday to extend their streak to five.
The recent winning streak by Chico has seen them climb into a 3rd place tie with Cal State Los Angeles and Cal Poly Pomona. Two teams the Wildcats will play on the road over the next month. Chico and Dominguez will play Saturday afternoon at 1pm with the pregame at 12:35pm
The Chico State men are looking for answers as they have seen their record slip to 8-10 overall and 6-7 in the CCAA. The Wildcats have lost four in a row and one glaring weakness continues to plague the Cats.
Chico's inability to get stops continues to cost them. The staple for Chico State over the last decade has been consistent lock-down defense, but this year the Wildcats are giving up 75 points a game with opponents shooting 45 percent from the field and 36 percent from three-point range. During the losing streak the Wildcats have struggled to get stops at the pivotal points in the game.
Despite the slide if the season ended today the Wildcats would be in the playoff mix. Chico is in a tie for sixth in the CCAA with Stanislaus State with the top six getting into the conference tournament in March. Considering this team's youth and inexperience, a trip to the CCAA Tournament would be a nice accomplishment for a team with so many new and young faces. Chico closes out this road trip with a 3pm match-up against Dominguez Hills. You can hear it exclusively on KpaySports 1290 and 102.9 FM.
