Yankees Win Stanton Sweepstakes

By Chandler Guadagnin

The Stanton Sweepstakes have finally come to an end. After months of swirling rumors, the Marlins have struck a deal with the Yankees to send Giancarlo Stanton to New York. When this process began, Stanton was believed to either be headed to the Giants or Cardinals. However, Stanton had all of the leverage because of the no-trade clause in his deal. As a result, Stanton vetoed the trade destinations of San Francisco and St. Louis. Stanton, who grew up in the Los Angeles area, stated that his number one trade destination would be the Dodgers. However, when that trade did not materialize, Stanton’s camp came out with a new list of teams to whom he would OK a trade. The teams on the list included the Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees.

Almost immediately after the new list broke, talks between the Marlins and Yankees began to intensify. As part of the deal the Yankees will pick up $260 million of the $295 million left on Stanton’s pact. In return for Stanton the Marlins will get Starlin Castro and pair of low-level prospects.  Here is a visual breakdown of the deal:

Stanton joins an outfield of Brett Gardner and AL Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge. Stanton adds his behemoth bat to a Yankees’ team that led Major League Baseball in 2017 with 241 homeruns. Giancarlo, who hit a Marlin’s franchise record 59 homers last season, is slotted in a lineup with rookie phenom Aaron Judge. Judge, himself, slugged 52 homeruns in 2017. Reportedly, the Yankees plan for their outfield is to rotate the outfielders between defense and the DH position. Below is the Yankees projected lineup in 2018:
