Kings rescue game on road versus Nuggets

DENVER (AP) — DeMarcus Cousins scored 39 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 48.3 seconds left, and the Sacramento Kings edged the Denver Nuggets 114-110 on Tuesday night.

Cousins came up big down the stretch, scoring eight of the final 13 points for the Kings, who blew a 17-point lead in the second half before rallying at the finish.

The All-Star center stole the ball from D.J. Augustin and was fouled on his way to the basket. He made both free throws to give the Kings a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Cousins preserved the win by stripping the ball away from Darrell Arthur in the final seconds.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers say they want to focus on getting a new stadium built as part of a non-contiguous expansion of the downtown convention center.

The measure could face strong opposition if any funding would require approval of two-thirds of the voters on the November ballot.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer and County Commissioner Ron Roberts had preferred a new stadium be built at the site of aging Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have signed tight end Garrett Celek (SEH’-lehk) to a four-year contract extension, preventing him from becoming an unrestricted free agent next month.

Celek played 11 games last season and started eight for San Francisco, catching 19 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns before missing the final month with an ankle injury.

The four-year pro has 27 career receptions for 328 yards and three touchdowns in 39 games.

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — New Padres bench coach Mark McGwire is absent from spring training while he takes care of family matters back in Southern California.

New manager Andy Green says McGwire, the one-time home run king, was in camp earlier, and the two talk by phone every day.

Says Green: “Family to us is the most important thing. We consider ourselves a family here. We want to make sure he’s got ample time to make sure he feels good about where his family is before he comes back this way.”

The Padres are scheduled for their first full-squad workout Wednesday.

Big Mac had been the hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers for the last three seasons before being hired by Green.
