Kings rescue game on road versus Nuggets

DENVER (AP) — DeMarcus Cousins scored 39 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 48.3 seconds left, and the Sacramento Kings edged the Denver Nuggets 114-110 on Tuesday night.

Cousins came up big down the stretch, scoring eight of the final 13 points for the Kings, who blew a 17-point lead in the second half before rallying at the finish.

The All-Star center stole the ball from D.J. Augustin and was fouled on his way to the basket. He made both free throws to give the Kings a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Cousins preserved the win by stripping the ball away from Darrell Arthur in the final seconds.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers say they want to focus on getting a new stadium built as part of a non-contiguous expansion of the downtown convention center.

The measure could face strong opposition if any funding would require approval of two-thirds of the voters on the November ballot.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer and County Commissioner Ron Roberts had preferred a new stadium be built at the site of aging Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have signed tight end Garrett Celek (SEH’-lehk) to a four-year contract extension, preventing him from becoming an unrestricted free agent next month.

Celek played 11 games last season and started eight for San Francisco, catching 19 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns before missing the final month with an ankle injury.

The four-year pro has 27 career receptions for 328 yards and three touchdowns in 39 games.

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — New Padres bench coach Mark McGwire is absent from spring training while he takes care of family matters back in Southern California.

New manager Andy Green says McGwire, the one-time home run king, was in camp earlier, and the two talk by phone every day.

Says Green: “Family to us is the most important thing. We consider ourselves a family here. We want to make sure he’s got ample time to make sure he feels good about where his family is before he comes back this way.”

The Padres are scheduled for their first full-squad workout Wednesday.

Big Mac had been the hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers for the last three seasons before being hired by Green.

Warriors blitz past Kings despite Casspi’s career night

(AP) — Stephen Curry overcame a slow start to score 23 points as part of his sixth career triple-double and the Golden State Warriors won for the 29th time in 30 games this season, 122-103 over the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

Curry added a career-high 14 rebounds and 10 assists, Klay Thompson scored 29 and Draymond Green had 25 for the Warriors, who have won 33 straight regular-season home games. Thompson said Steve Kerr had to give the Warriors a pep talk at halftime…..

Omri Casspi scored a career-high 36 points, tying Mike Bibby’s team record with nine 3-pointers for Sacramento. But the Kings still lost their 11th straight against their Northern California rivals.

Kings star center Demarcus Cousins was ejected from the game in the early third quarter after arguing with officials over picking up his fifth foul. The Warriors countered his ejection with a 16-0 run and the Kings would never get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Warriors look to move to 29-1 against Kings tonight at Oracle

By Mike Baca

The Golden State Warriors look to stay perfect tonight as they take on the Sacramento Kings at the Oracle in Oakland. The Warriors (28-1) take on a Kings squad that limped through another home game at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. Head Coach George Karl walked out of his post-game presser last night muttering, “i’m frustrated” after his squad repeatedly shot themselves in the foot with turnover and bad possessions down the stretch in a 98-94 loss to Portland on Sunday night.

The Warriors await the return of Steve Kerr to their bench after his off-season back surgery led to health ailments that stretched into the regular season. The Warriors are perfect at home and look to continue the best start in NBA history as they host their neighbors to the north.

Game time is at 7:30pm on CSN Bay Area
