Wildcats primed for 2019….

Chico State Baseball Opens 2019 campaign in Fresno

The 2019 installment of the Chico State Wildcat Baseball team opens their 2019 season against a recognizable face. The head coach for Fresno Pacific is former Wildcat and NCAA National Champion Oscar Hirschkorn. Oscar was a pitcher on the Wildcats 1997 team that captured the Division II title in Montgomery, Alabama.

For Wildcat head coach Dave Taylor this season opening series will give him a glimpse at what he has for the upcoming season. It is also an important preview for the 2019 year, as the Sunbirds are the only in-region out of conference foe on the schedule.

The Wildcats have punched their ticket to the NCAA West Regional 18 times over the last 23 years and this year they want to keep dancing. Nine of those trips to regionals have resulted in nirvana…trips to the Division II College World Series in either Alabama or Cary, North Carolina. To put themselves in position the Cats will need to rely on a virtually brand new cast of characters.

Two years ago the Wildcats were the number one team in the nation and the top seed in the regional before being unceremoniously bounced in the regional. Last year the Wildcats got hot down the stretch and came up with some key wins in the final few weeks to garner the last spot in the regional field but also bowed out in two games.

Taylor says the team’s goals are pretty lofty this season. He says they want to host the Super Regional best of three series that determines who punches their ticket to Cary. To do it, the Cats will need to battle some of the best competition in Division II baseball. UC San Diego is looking to make their third straight trip to the D-II World Series. While they lost some key pieces, they also bring back a strong core that made a memorable post-season run last year.

Chico was able to just edge Pomona for the final NCAA Regional berth. The Broncos return some young solid position players and they always have arms with electric stuff. The Monterey Bay Otters were the top seed at the regional last year, but came up just short in their quest for a regional title.

The season is finally here. The 2019 Wildcats will take the field at 11am on Friday hoping its the first step in a journey that ultimately leads to Cary #RoadToCary
