We are now just days away from the start of the second installment of Chico Heat baseball ! Northstate baseball fans, who have been spoiled with the unprecedented success of the Chico State and Butte College along with the successes of the local high schools and the Chico Nuts now get their summer baseball fix back.
Unlike their Heat predecessors who played at Nettleton Stadium between 1997-2002, this installment of Heat ballplayers will not be professional paid players. The 2016 Heat will be playing in a summer wood bat league. The inaugural season for the Great West League will have teams in Chico, Lodi, Marysville, Sacramento, Portland and Medford. The rosters will be filled with college players from all over the country looking to showcase their skills for scouts. These will all be under-classmen who still have college eligibility. You will not see any graduating seniors on any of these teams.
I have watched from afar as these college wood bat leagues flourish in other communities and I fully expect this to do well here in Chico. Opening day is on June 3rd with a match-up in Marysville. The home opener is on June 4th at The Nett.
