You gotta pitch, you gotta pick it, when you don’t do either, you don’t win. The Chico State Wildcats (10-3 overall; 0-1 CCAA) baseball team lost game one of their four-game CCAA conference opening series to the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters 8-5.

Chico was out-hit 13 to 7 by the Otters who lead the CCAA in home runs with 18 in thirteen games. Kevin Davidson hit a game tying solo shot in the sixth for the Otters to tie the game at 2. Chico starter Clayton Gelfand pitched well but left the game in the seventh with the lead run at third and two outs in the 7th. Chico’s bullpen, which has been a strength, struggled on Friday. The Wildcat pen went 2.1 inning giving up five hits and 5 runs. A far cry from the dominant group they have been all season long.

Chico’s inability to get anything generated against Otters starter Gabe Katich was a point of frustration all day. Katich faced in the minimum in 5 of the 8 innings he pitched. He picked up his second win of the season scattering five hits over 7.2 innings walking one and striking out four. With the win the Otters moved to 12-1 overall and 1-0 in CCAA play.

The two teams play a double-header on Saturday with game one starting at 11am on Newstalk 1290 KPAY and right here on KpaySports.com.
