Four pitchers combined on a 5-hit complete game shut out as the Chico State Wildcats knocked off the Point Loma Sea Lions in the opening game of a pivotal three game in-region series this weekend at Nettleton Stadium
Clayton Gelfand shined again for the Cats as he pitched six innings scattering five hits and giving up no runs. Gelfand only walked one hitter, his first in 12.1 innings on the season. Last year Gelfand was his own worst enemy at times walking a batter every two innings but he has been a more aggressive pitcher this year, pounding the strike zone and using his defense. Chico manufactured runs early with stolen bases, good reads on the bases and heads up situational hitting to grab a 4-0 lead after 4 innings.
Gelfand went six solid innings with relief help from Stuart Bradley, Torgen Soderlund and Hunter Haworth. If Chico State wants to make a post-season run a successful weekend against the Sea Lions would help. Point Loma won 33 games last year and has 21 returners from their regional squad. Chico knows winning the series will strengthen, what they hope is a glowing resume in May.
The Wildcats will play two games tomorrow against the Sea Lions with both games on KpaySports.com and ChicoWildcats.com and at least the first game of the double-dip on AM-1290 KPAY.
